Your August Communications and PR Calendar

July 31, 2025

By: Emma Fairbanks-Lee

Summer is winding down. The back-to-school sales say it is so.

Yet the dog days of August aren’t just about kicking back. The month is packed with timely hooks and fresh opportunities to engage your audience.

August celebrates both Black Philanthropy Month and National Black Business Month. Both present month-long opportunities to showcase and support the incredible contributions of Black Americans across philanthropy and business. And both offer great hooks for PR pitches and an opportunity to highlight people and programs on your own channels.

August also plays host to National Back to School Month, National Wellness Month, International Peace Month, and National Water Quality Month, all of which offer strong hooks for sharing resources or initiatives your organization supports.

See below for more of what to expect this August:

August 1 - Startup Day Across America (Congressional Startup Day)

Startup Day Across America, also known as Congressional Startup Day, celebrates entrepreneurship and aims to provide entrepreneurs with necessary resources. It also looks to provide a platform for entrepreneurs to connect with their lawmakers.

August 2 - National VFR Day

The first Saturday of August celebrates National VFR Day – a day to honor and raise awareness for the mental health of veterans and first responders. Use your platform to share mental health resources for veterans and first responders in your community.

August 3 - National Friendship Day

National Friendship Day celebrates the importance of friendship. Take some time to spend with friends and let them know what they mean to you. This is also an opportunity to highlight the relationships that have been forged through your work in the community.

August 3-9 - National Health Center Week

National Health Center Week recognizes and celebrates Community Health Centers, nonprofit, community-based healthcare organizations that provide accessible, affordable, and quality healthcare, particularly to underserved populations. The week aims to raise awareness about these centers, highlight their impact, and show appreciation for their staff, patients, and partners.

August 7 - Purple Heart Day

Purple Heart Day honors and remembers those wounded or killed in action while serving in the U.S. military. This is a chance to acknowledge the sacrifices of veterans in your own community and consider sharing available resources for veterans and their families.

August 9 - Day of the World’s Indigenous People

Established by the UN General Assembly in 1994, The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples recognizes and celebrates the unique cultures, traditions, and contributions of the indigenous populations worldwide, while also raising awareness for the challenges they face. Highlight the Indigenous peoples in your community and take some time to share their history and offer resources.

August 12 - International Youth Day

International Youth Day recognizes the contributions, as well as the potential, of young people while also drawing attention to the issues they face. On this day, take some time to bring awareness to the youth engaged in your community, as well as the resources available to them. This is also a great opportunity to highlight the youth initiatives your organization leads or supports.

August 15 - National Relaxation Day

It’s been a chaotic year so far and it’s important to take some time to decompress. National Relaxation Day reminds us to prioritize relaxation and self-care.

August 17 - National Nonprofit Day

National Nonprofit Day recognizes the work of nonprofit organizations and the impact they have on their communities. If you’re at a nonprofit, toot your horn! For foundations or businesses this is also the perfect opportunity to promote nonprofits your organization is partnered with or supports that are making a difference every day.

August 21 - National Senior Citizens Day

National Senior Citizens Day celebrates the achievements and contributions of older adults in society. This day encourages communities to ensure senior citizens can live with independence and dignity, as well as raises awareness about the challenges they face.

August 23 - International Remembrance of the Slave Trade

International Remembrance of the Slave Trade is dedicated to remembering the victims of the transatlantic slave trade. This day aims to remind people of the tragedy of the slave trade and encourage reflection on its consequences and lasting impact on the world.

August 26 - Women’s Equality Day

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution was certified, granting women the right to vote. Women’s Equality Day honors this landmark achievement and serves as a reminder to continue working towards gender equality. Take some time on this day to share initiatives your organization leads or supports for women and girls in your community.
