November brings shorter days and cooler weather. It also serves as a time for reflection and appreciation (and, of course, turkey).

National Gratitude Month provides the perfect opportunity to acknowledge the vital contributions of donors, partners, and community members to your organization.

November is also Native American Heritage Month, with National Native American Heritage Day on Nov. 28. Learn more about how you can recognize and honor indigenous cultures in your communications.

Explore more of what November has to offer below.

No-Shave November

The men’s health nonprofit Movember offers a classic case-study in how to effectively connect your cause to the calendar. Participants in its “No-Shave November” fundraising campaign stop shaving and grooming to represent the loss of hair often experienced by cancer patients.

National Career Development Month

National Career Development Month— and Job Action Day (Nov. 3) — focus on helping individuals grow in their careers. At a time when many Americans are struggling to break through in a tight job market, these events offer opportunities to advance initiatives and policies that prepare people for family-sustaining careers.

Nov. 2 – Daylight Savings Time Ends

It’s time to turn back those clocks. On Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2 a.m. local time the clocks will fall back an hour. This means an extra hour of sleep, but also darker evenings.

Nov. 10 – National Civic Pride Day

National Civic Pride Day encourages individuals to express pride in their communities, as well as get involved locally. It presents an opportunity for community foundations and other local organizations to spotlight the importance of civic participation and invite community members to give back to local organizations.

Nov. 10-14 – National Young Readers Week

This week aims to encourage a love for reading among young people. You can use it to spotlight programs, organizations, or initiatives in your community that promote reading — or to celebrate the importance of libraries.

Nov. 10-16 – World Kindness Week

World Kindness Week, which includes World Kindness Day (Nov. 13), aims to promote and celebrate acts of kindness. It offers an excellent hook for content that spotlights your volunteers or social media features that invite your community to share examples of everyday heroes who act with kindness and compassion.

Nov. 11 – Veterans Day

Veterans Day commemorates those who have served in the United States military. This day follows National Forget-Me-Not Day (Nov. 10), which honors wounded military veterans. Both days are also a part of Military Family Month, and all three of these events serve as an opportunity for your organization to acknowledge the sacrifices of service members and their families, and share available resources in your community.

Nov. 12-18 – Community Foundation Week

Community foundations have been making a positive difference in the United States for more than a century. Yet most Americans don’t understand what community foundations do, what they stand for, or how to get involved.

For community foundations, this week serves as the perfect opportunity to promote your organization, highlight key initiatives, and showcase how you are making more possible in your community.

Turn Two has been leading efforts to raise awareness about the work of community foundations through the Make More Possible branding campaign. You can learn more here.

Nov. 15 – National Philanthropy Day

National Philanthropy Day celebrates charitable activities and organizations, and their contributions to making the world a better place. For philanthropic organizations, this is another great opportunity to share and promote your initiatives, celebrate your partners, and share how people can get involved.

Nov. 16-22 – Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week

In a month when much of the focus is on food, it’s important to remember that many lack access. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week aims to raise awareness about these related issues — and educate the public about their root causes. Use this week to share information and resources in your community and promote initiatives and organizations seeking to eradicate the issue.

Nov. 17-21 – American Education Week

American Education Week celebrates public education in the United States, as well as the individuals working to ensure that every student receives a quality education. Nov. 23-29 – Better Conversations Week

Better Conversations Week high highlights the importance of active listening, asking questions, and being mindful of others' experiences, all of which serve as important reminders for social good organizations.
