Time to Look Back, Charge Forward

It’s been a challenging year.

Head-shaking headlines. Constant conflicts at home and abroad. Ominous changes in the federal government that have stark consequences for social good organizations.

It’s a lot. And few among us are immune from the impact – whether it be direct hits or navigating the daily fog of uncertainty.

As communicators, it's often our role to lead through the chaos, sharing key information, handling crises, telling the stories that move our missions forward, and plenty more.

It hasn’t been easy, but we are on the brink of a chance to reset and recharge courtesy of the calendar.

The holiday season — and within it giving season — is fast approaching. With it comes a collective shift in mindset and authentic opportunities to reflect on what we’ve achieved over the past year – and paint a picture for a more promising tomorrow.

Here are three ways that the end-of-year stretch offers a window to gain some inspiration and momentum – for both your team and your audiences.

1. Take a look back

It’s human nature to get caught up in the daily struggle, but if you take time to review your communications over the past year, you’re certain to find some gems.

There are stories of those who overcame big odds, campaigns that delivered results, and crises either averted or effectively managed.

Find a way to recap and share these wins as a means to inspire both your team and your supporters.

Maybe it’s reflecting on a win a week or publishing a robust year in review.

Regardless of how you execute it, the end result is a fresh perspective that progress is possible in even the toughest times.

2. Elevate fresh voices

Your organization has surely touched the lives of many over the last 10 months.

There are donors and volunteers who have been inspired to give their time and money. Individuals or families' lives have been improved thanks to your help and support. Team members and supporters went the extra mile to make a difference.

Go back through your communications and create a list of your difference-makers. Then, look for ways to capture and share their stories, reflections, and insights.

3. Plan for a better tomorrow

This is prime time to re-evaluate and re-focus on how to start the new year strong and maintain momentum moving forward. Make sure you’re finding time and space to do some deep reflection, both personally and as a team.

You can then pivot forward to identify the strategies and tactics that will move the needle in 2025.

Once you land on some firm plans, look for ways to share your vision to inspire hope and commitment.

Maybe that comes in the form of a letter from a leader or a series of communications that tease out how your organization is looking toward 2026 with clarity and purpose.

Yes, 2025 has been tough. Yet here we are – still standing, still fighting, still dreaming. You’ve proved you have what it takes.

By sharing your successes and laying out your vision moving forward, those in your audience and organization will realize they have it as well.
