Creating a Roadmap for Improving Rural Health

The Problem

Rural communities often get overlooked – and they are vastly underfunded by foundations.

Against that backdrop, the Atlanta-based Georgia Health Initiative (previously Healthcare Georgia Foundation) launched an ambitious five-year effort to address health equity in rural communities across Georgia through the Two Georgias Initiative.

As the project neared its formal end in 2022, Georgia Health Initiative wanted to capture the Two Georgias’ story to highlight its broad scope and deep impact — with the goal of honoring the communities involved and providing a roadmap for other foundations for working in rural communities.

The Solution

The foundation enlisted Turn Two and Georgia video agency 1 Accord Media to tell the story through documentary-style videos and a long-form narrative report — A Journey Toward Equity — that is rich with context, community voices, and relevant insights. The report serves as an essential primer for other foundations seeking to make a difference in rural communities.

Results

  • The Journey Toward Equity’s videos and report were unveiled at an online premiere attended by more than 100 participants from the philanthropic world.

  • Georgia Health Initiative was honored with Philanthropy Southeast’s highest annual honor,  The Truist Promise Award, which recognizes innovative initiatives that tackle significant and systemic issues. Turn Two was invited to the organization’s annual conference to discuss the creation and impact of Journey Toward Equity.

  • The report helped the foundation garner media attention in publications across Georgia and the country and there are plans for an upcoming feature in the Chronicle of Philanthropy
